Wie dacht dat 'verluchte manuscripten' uitsluitend in de Christelijke traditie voorkomen zit er goed naast.
Want overal waar er sprake is van dezelfde techniek vind men de meest prachtige 'verlichte/verluchte geschriften.'
Niet alleen de Islamitische, die tegenwoordig 'populair' zijn, getuige het aanbod op veilingsites als Catawiki, maar zeker ook de schitterende voorbeelden uit de Hebreeuwse traditie.
Van de illuminated manuscripts in mijn bezit is dit exemplaar het grootste wat afmeting betreft, n.l. 24,5 x 35 cm.
Niet bepaald een zakboekje!
Maar mensch, wat een pracht van een boekwerk!

An historiated title panel for the "Book of Sacrifices," depicting two priests performing the sacrifice outside the Temple, here represented by an octagonal domed building. This resembles the Dome of the Rock, built on the site of the Jerusalem Temple.

A carpet page decorated with foliage scrolls painted in gold;
the leaves and background are in magenta wash.
The scrolls and leaves are outlined by micrographic masorah.
The whole carpet is framed by masorah written in large letters
and surrounded by smaller script.

Two people in prayer, each within an initial-word panel, are depicted on the first page.
A man leaving prison holding his chains, illustrating the text
"I called upon the Lord in distress. The Lord answered me"
(Ps. 118: 3-7), is found on the second page.

Germany, Ulm (?), 1236-1238.
This miniature depicts the feast of the Righteous in Paradise.
They are seated, all wearing gold crowns
and feasting from a table covered with food and drink.
Two musicians are stationed at either end of the table.
At the top of the miniature are the leviathan and wild ox,
the legendary food of the Righteous in Paradise,
and the dragon-like mythical bird, ziz,
symbolising the last day of judgement.

The 46 roundels should be read
from right to left, top to bottom.
From Adam and Eve and the serpent
till Balaam, the angel, and the she-ass.

Ibn Sinna's Canon (medical treatise)
Italy, Ferrarese, 15th century.
The half-page miniature shows a madman in prison
being haunted by creatures like a dragon, snake, crab, and scorpion.
A hermit gathers herbs, which he gives to a woman
to administer to the madman.
The smaller miniatures illustrate a man bitten by a snake
and death taking its toll of man regardless of his station in life.
The meaning of the other miniature on this page is unclear.

Dat de postzegels van Israel tot de mooiste ontwerpen ter wereld gerekend mogen worden
staat voor mij als een paal boven water.
Een staaltje van ongekende perfectie laat hier enkele handschriften-op-postzegels zien
in een serie uit 1986, uitgegeven voor het Jewish New Year:
